SEM HAN
This series is a long-format children’s novel, filled with both plenty of text and many illustrations. Unlike my picture books, I couldn’t give every image the same level of dense detail, but I drew them with clean lines and a playful, comic-like style to keep things fun. Rather than aiming for beauty, I focused on making the drawings make readers laugh.
From the very beginning — when there was nothing but an idea — I worked closely with the publisher on the overall concept and artwork direction, creating the characters, the visual structure, and the design of the illustrations.
As the series continued, its popularity grew, and over three years we released five volumes, bringing the story to a close. As an illustrator, though, I had created so many characters I loved that I would have happily gone on to make ten more books.
