Sometimes I’m contacted with a request to use an existing illustration as a book cover. It feels like a bonus, but I hesitate because it can make the artwork feel subordinated to the book, or even like it’s twisting the story’s content. Even so, I don’t think I’ve ever actually refused.
Editors and designers usually reach out after careful consideration, believing the image fits perfectly, so there’s no need for me to overthink it. And, in the end, no one really pays that much attention anyway.
